The job of the historian is divided into four broad categories: research and writing; teaching and public presentation; historic preservation; and organization and advocacy. The primary responsibility is the interpretation of the past, but it is also important to serve as the primary resource person to the local government, schools, community, community organizations, the press and the public in general.
To preserve and maintain the historical records and architecture of the community for the enrichment of current and future generations and to act as an advocate for these properties when they are threatened.
To promote the establishment and improvement of programs for the management and preservation of the local history.
