A WORD FROM THE MAYOR

Protecting Our Architectural
Heritage:
APRB Zoning Rules Are Important

One of the things that attracts newcomers to Pittsford Village is its architectural charm. Most appreciate that our history as a village is cherished by those who live here and that certain rules have been established to ensure that our legacy is protected.

Anyone planning to make changes to the exterior of a building in the Village or altering the environment ~ changes which can be seen from a street or waterway ~ should first talk with the Village Clerk. Clerk Anne Hartsig or her deputy, Mary Marowski, will give you a copy of the zoning code to review.

As you know, plans for many prospective changes must be presented in advance to the Architectural and Preservation Review Board (APRB). The board meets once a month to determine whether proposed changes are compatible with the building under consideration and with its neighbors. The board's decision ~ to approve, approve with conditions, or disapprove ~ is given in writing within 25 working days of the application.

You can pick up a copy of the zoning code at the Village Office, 21 North Main Street. Here are a few of its salient points:

  • APRB members will assist property owners on the physical and financial aspects of preservation, renovation, rehabilitation, and reuses.
  • The APRB reviews the kind and texture of building materials, siding materials, types of windows, doors, lights, fences, signs, and other fixtures, as well as proposed changes in the height of buildings.

Dear Village neighbors,

Pittsford Village is not immune to the effects of growth, demographic shifts, and increased traffic occurring in the surrounding region. To preserve the Village's best qualities, we must converse as a community to determine ways of managing inevitable changes.

In this issue you will find information about Phase I of the Village Comprehensive Plan which focuses on our section of the Erie Canal Corridor. (Phase II will address traffic, parking, and other issues in the rest of the Village.)

A committee of Village residents and business people has worked many hours putting together this first phase of our "blueprint for the future." Based on your feedback and input from multiple public hearings, the Village Board has adopted Phase I and has applied for a grant to help us implement some of the recommendations.

Pittsford Village has a long, rich history. This historic village environment we enjoy today is the cumulative result of outstanding citizens working to better our community over a period of many years.

As elected officials, your Village Board has two primary goals. We want to protect the qualities of the Village valued by citizens, for their enjoyment as well as for future generations.

CorbyHelp us by taking an active part in the life of your Village.
