Third Annual 'Pittsford Regatta'
Makes Canal Come Alive!

Oarsmen and oarswomen (young and not-so-young) will make Schoen Place their destination June 10-11, for the third annual two-day Pittsford Regatta. Rowing (or sculling, as it's sometimes called) has become a big-time sport in the Rochester area. The success of Pittsfod's high school teams has sparked a strong interest in the sport locally.

"We see this as an event that will attract a lot of people to the canal ~ not just the teams and their friends and families, but others interested in seeing a wonderful sports event, full of color and action," says Greg Messner, President of the PVBA. "We're planning to have light entertainment in the form of strolling musicians, food concessions, and sidewalk sales."

Co-sponsers of the event are the Pittsford Village Business Association (PVBA) and the Pittsford Crew Club. While the University of Rochester's Stonehurst Regatta draws thousands of people to the Genesee River each October for a major intercollegiate crew comptetion, Pittsford is the first municipality to feature the sport in this way.

Grand Mashall for the regatta will be William B. Warren, III, of Brighton. Warren, a member of the New York State Thruway Commission (which has jurisdiction over the canal), has helped make development of local rowing a high-priority goal. Pittsford teams use training and storage facilities at the new boathouse near the clover Clover Street locks named for Warren and built with donated funds.

Local merchants are enthusiastic about the addition to the Pittsford calendar.

A "duck race" (in which numbered plastic ducks, purchased by the public, are dropped from the canal bridge and carried by the water to a finishing point ) will benefit Pittsford Youth Services.

"We expect to have 150 high school students competing, and we've invited the Rocehster Rowing Club to schedule races during the regatta, as well," says neurosurgeon Richard Feins, whose dedication to the sport has sparked the development of Pittsford's rowing program. "We'll have a full complement of races ~ singles, pairs, fours, and eights." (The latter terms refer to the number of rowers in each boat, a number that determins the boat's length and configuration.)

Organizers are seeking sponsors willing to donate trophies to be awarded to the winning teams. If you're interested in becoming a sponsor, please contact the PVBA at 383-1210.
