It's Spring Clean-Up Time!

While Pittsford Village offers an indispensable service in picking up all last year's leaf mulch and winter blow-downs, certain state- and fedreally-mandated rules for pickup must be followed. Scott Spencer, head of the Village DPW crew, lists these important rules for you to remember:

  • Place grass, weeds, flower clippings, apples, nuts and similiar small debris in biodegradable paper bags or in reusable rubbish containers. Containers should not exceed 50 pounds. Composting is encouraged. Refuse in plastic bags will not be picked up, since plastic cannot be composted.
  • At this time of year, leaves should be placed in containers like other debris ~ not left on the curb.
  • Large trees and other debris gathered by a private professional contracter should be taken directly to the Town of Pittsford's Highway Garage on Golf Ave.
  • Items such as water tanks, stoves, furniture, building materials, etc., cannot be collected by the Village DPW. Call your private waste hauler for help in diposing of these items.

If you have questions, please call the DPW at 586-9320 or the Village Office at 586-4332.

M O N D A Y is the day for the Village's weekly brush and yard debris pickup, weather permitting.

Village's Tom Heagerty Honored:
25 Years A Fireman

Village resident Thomas M. Heagerty, Jr., first volunteered as a recruit firefighter in Pittsford in 1974. Over the past quarter of a century, Heagerty has advanced to the top of the ladder (no pun intended), rising from new recruit to line officer, to assistant chief, to chief ('93-'94), within an organization he continues to honor and serve. Heagerty was honered for his 25 years of service at the Pittsford Fire Department's annual banquet March 25 at Green Hills Country Club. Two other firemen (non-village residents) with quarter-century careers were also honored.

Tom's ties to Pittsford Village are strong. A fourth-generation member of the Forman family, his great-grandfather founded L.C. Forman & Sons on Grove Street. During the Twenties, the close-knit family developed the firm into one of the Northeast's premier producers of picklesand other condiments. (The building has since been converted into an office complex and is well-known simply as "The Pickle Factory.")

Tom and his wife, Cindy, live in one of the Forman homes, at 19 Elm Street. Tom is a field auditor for the NYS Insurance Fund; Cindy is deputy treasurer of the Pittsford Central School District. (On occasion, you may see Tom taking "Spudley," his venerable English springer spaniel, out for some exercise on village streets.)
