A Message from Our Building Inspector

Throughout the year, many applications are made to the Village Board of Trustees, Zoning Board of Appeals, Planning Board, and Architectural and Preservation Review Board. These applications include requests for special permits, use variances, area variances, site plan approval, subdivisions, and changes to the exteriors of structures. The Board of Trustees may also amend or enact local laws.

These projects have an affect on neighboring properties; often residents and merchants are concerned that a project may affect the Village environment in a negative way. Issues such as increased traffic, impact on parking, and aesthetics are often raised. Your input is important and can help the boards make wise decisions.

Notification of pending applications is provided to the community in several ways. Decisions on application before the Trustees, Zoning, and Planning Boards are made at public hearings. The procedure for notice of a public hearing is regulated by state law and village code. State law requires that a notice be published in the official newspaper of the Village at least seven days before the public hearing. These notices are found in the Brighton-Pittsford Post in the second section under "Legal Notices."

Chapter 145-78.1 of the Village Code requires the applicant to erect a sign on the subject property at least 10 days before a public hearing. The sign must contain the nature of the application and the time and date of the hearing. In addition, the Village Clerk must notify by mail all property owners within 300 feet of the applicant's property.

There is no public notice of applications to the Architectural and Preservation Review Board, but a schedule of meetings is available at the Village Office and an agenda is provided prior to each month's meeting.

You can participate in our boards' decision-making by:

Gates in the enclosure have to be self-closing and self-latching, with the latch inside the enclosure, and secured with a key lock. There are specific enclosure requirements for decks and walls of a dwelling adjacent to pools.

  • Testifying at the public hearing. Hearings are held at the Village Office, 21 North Main St. Most meetings begin at 7:30 p.m.
  • Providing your written comments. Mail your comments to the Village Office before the hearing, fax them (586-4597) up to the day of the hearing, or present them in person at the hearing.
  • Telephone comments (586-4332). Village staff will note your concerns and forward them to the appropriate board.
  • E-mail your comments to a particular board in care of the Village Clerk at: pittvill@frontiernet.net.
The Village's web site (under development) is another source of information on board members, applications, and meeting dates. The web site address is www.villageof pittsford.org.

Our New Trustee:
Tom Farlow

Life-long Pittsford resident Tom Farlow, a site engineer for the engineering consulting firm Sear-Brown, has been appointed to fill the unexpired term of former Village Trustee Dick Dennison.
Farlow, who lives on Line Street, knows the Village well. He serves as training captain for the Pittsford Fire Department, organizing and supervising weekly drills for the 65 firemen on active duty. A graduate of Clarkson University, Tom continued on at his alma mater, receiving a master's degree in business administration.
Tom grew up in the Town of Pittsford, but for the past two years has been a Village resident-and he's enthusiastic about village living. "I like the easy interaction with people in the community and the convenience of being able to walk where I need to go. I like the historical pride that people in the Village have, and the fact that everything here is in the proper scale. Everything fits together nicely."

DPW Gets Ready for Spring!

We haven't yet seen the year's last snowfall, but the Village DPW crew is already busy cleaning up after winter. Remember, Monday is the day for the weekly brush and yard debris pickup, weather permitting.
Here are some important rules to follow-all through the year:

  • Place grass, weeds, flower clippings, apples, nuts and similar small debris in biodegradable paper bags or in reusable rubbish containers. Please keep leaves and brush separate from each other. Containers should not exceed 50 pounds. Refuse in plastic bags will not be picked up, since plastic cannot be composted.
  • Composting is encouraged.
  • Large trees and other debris gathered by a private professional contractor should be taken directly to the Town of Pittsford's Highway Garage on Golf Ave.
  • Items such as water tanks, stoves, furniture, building materials, etc., cannot be collected by the Village DPW. Call your private waste hauler for help in disposing of these items.

If you have questions, please call the DPW at 586-9320 or the Village Office at 586-4332.
