Sunday,
June 29th
Save the date for the Village's big birthday
party!
|
This is an advance invitation for all Pittsford residents
and their friends to step back to the early days of
the 19th century. Come gather in front of the Village
Hall the last Sunday in June (6/ 29) and celebrate “Founders’
Day.”
Tall hats, frock coats, and long skirts will be much
in evidence, as our founding fathers and mothers (actually,
present-day citizens) seem to come to life as they reenact
the ceremony that established Northfield as one of Monroe
County’s earliest communities.
“We had such a good time last
year celebrating our
175th anniversary that we decided to make Founders’
Day an annual event,” says Mayor Bob Corby. “Pittsford
has a grand and colorful history, and we want to keep
that history alive. It’s also a wonderful occasion
to get together and have some old-fashioned fun!”
Pittsford Historian Audrey Johnson
is chairing a committee that has put together a full
schedule of events starting at noon in front of the
Wiltsie Building on North Main Street (the Village Hall),
where the reenactment will take place.
North Main Street at the Four Corners
area will be closed from noon to 8 p.m. to accommodate
the festivities.
“Once again, we will have a concert by our wonderful
Pittsford Firemens’ Band, walking tours, boat
rides from the Port of Pittsford to the Great Embankment,
a pig roast, and an art show,” says Audrey Johnson.
Awards will
be presented for baked goods in several categories,
the best garden, and the biggest fish caught that day
in the canal.
Strolling musicians will entertain
along Schoen Place,
and games will be available for children in the Port
of
Pittsford Park.
The evening will conclude with a
square dance in the street with a noted area caller.

Do
you recognize these “pioneers”?
Seen at last year’s 175th Anniversary
celebration
(now renamed Founders’ Day) were these time-travelers,
whom we hope will be back again this year. From
left:
Paul Knickerbocker, John Hopkins, David Crump. |
They’re
helping bring the past to life!
Many of our neighbors
are working with the Village/Town Historian and Village
officers and staff to make Founders’ Day a success.
Among them are: Norm Johnson, Mary Menzie, Jack Holzwarth,
Barry Sens, Tom Farlow, Dorothy
Meusburger, Peggy Brizee, Beth Embley, Swanda Reddington,
Maria Powers, Diane and George Dreschler, Paula Sherwood,
and Lisa Onoff.
On behalf of the Mayor
and the Board of Trustees, a special thank you is extended
to our Founders’ Day committee and to our Village
businesses for their contribution to make Founders’
Day happen.
